We’ve scored a stash of MAGNUMS from the legendary Hallberg Ranch, and let’s just say this bottle has enough "main character energy" to command any dinner table. Emeritus Vineyards was founded in 1999 by the iconic Brice Cutrer Jones (the man who built Sonoma-Cutrer into a powerhouse) after he sold his first winery to start a passion project dedicated solely to dry-farmed Pinot Noir.
Today, the estate is a family fortress run by his daughter, Mari Jones, who is just as obsessive about quality as her old man. Fun fact: the corks at Emeritus actually show you how to pronounce the name (it’s eh-ME-ri-tus, in case you were wondering)!
The 2021 vintage is a masterclass in Russian River Valley elegance, artfully blended from every parcel on the dry-farmed Hallberg Ranch. To achieve its sophisticated polish, the wine underwent traditional ageing in French oak barrels (about 35% new), allowing the delicate mountain brush and spice notes to meld with the lush fruit.
On the nose, expect a detailed explosion of goji berry, orange zest, and cranberries, with a sophisticated dusting of cocoa powder and crushed violets. The palate is pure "textbook" Russian River—energetic and sleek, bursting with juicy strawberry, ripe plum, and red berry flavours. It finishes with a fine-grained tannic structure and a lingering whisper of clove and allspice.
At 94 points and in a glorious 1.5L format, you’d better clear some cellar space before the Pinot-purists realise we’re letting these go at this price!
