Conn Creek, Reserve Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 2023

I pulled the cork on the 2023 Conn Creek Reserve, and the scent of dark currants and toasted oak immediately took me back. I poured two glasses, the wine a deep, shimmering garnet, and handed one to my wife as we sat amidst the quiet of the evening. ​ "Taste this," I said. "Does it take you back?" ​ She took a sip, the 94-point velvet hitting her palate, and a small smile tugged at her lips. "The first night in the house," she whispered. ​ I remembered it perfectly. We were exhausted, surrounded by towers of unpacked boxes in a kitchen that didn't feel like ours yet. We didn't have chairs, so we sat on the floor, using a packing crate as a table. I’d tucked a bottle of Conn Creek into my bag as a surprise. ​ We drank it out of mismatched tumblers, the rich black cherry and cocoa notes a stark, beautiful contrast to the bare walls around us. ​ This 2023 vintage, with its 20 months of French oak aging, feels just as substantial as that memory.
