Caymus Vineyards, founded in 1972 by Chuck Wagner and his parents Lorna and Charlie, is a cornerstone of Napa Valley history. The "Special Selection" is their flagship label, first released in 1975. It holds the unique distinction of being the only wine to ever be named "Wine of the Year" twice by Wine Spectator.
Caymus is synonymous with the "Napa Style"; wines that are unapologetically bold, fruit-forward, and possess velvety tannins. While many producers chase European austerity, the Wagners embrace the California sunshine, allowing grapes to hang on the vine longer for maximum ripeness.
The motto is "A family of farmers." This reflects their deep-rooted connection to the soil and their hands-on approach to viticulture across generations.
100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Unlike many "Meritages," Caymus focuses on the pure expression of the varietal. Aged extensively (usually around 18 months) in French oak barrels. They utilize a high percentage of new oak to impart sweet spice and structural backbone.
The 2020 Special Selection is a masterclass in opulence. It opens with an explosive nose of crème de cassis and violets. The palate is decadently plush, featuring layers of ripe blackberry, dark chocolate, and toasted oak. Its hallmark is the velvety, "melted" tannins that lead to a seamless, cocoa-dusted finish.
Pair this powerhouse with a thick-cut, peppercorn-crusted Ribeye steak served with a red wine reduction to match the wine's intensity and fat-cutting tannins.
