Armida Winery was established in 1988, but its modern era began in 1994 when Steve and Bruce Cousins purchased the estate. Perched on a hill overlooking the Russian River Valley, Armida has built a reputation for producing "dangerously good" wines. The Maple Vineyards site is legendary in Sonoma County. Owned by Tom and Tina Maple, the vineyard is dry-farmed and features head-trained vines planted in red, rocky volcanic soil. This specific bottling comes from some of the oldest blocks on the property, where the vines have spent decades digging deep into the benchland soils. Armida’s guiding philosophy is "Artistically Crafted. Dangerously Good." It reflects their commitment to high-end winemaking while maintaining a sense of humour and approachable West Coast hospitality. The blend is made up roughly 95% Zinfandel and 5% Petite Sirah. Aged for approximately 16–18 months in French oak barrels (typically around 30%–40% new). This softens the high tannins of the Dry Creek fruit without masking the vineyard's spicy character. Expansive aromas of cedar, rose petals, and violets lead to a rich, layered palate of blackberry preserves, plum liqueur, and dark cherry. Brooding notes of mocha, liquorice, and savoury spices build tension against smooth, medium-grained tannins. The finish is lush and succulent, lingering with a warm blanket of vanilla oak. Pair this with slow-smoked beef brisket slathered in a spicy, coffee-based BBQ rub.
